- Using different methods, children discover the variety of different invertebrates in a chosen habitat
: Trays, paintbrushes, old sheet, bug boxes, plastic bags
Ask pupils to shake a tree with a sheet underneath, where the children are split into groups of 5. Each group is given a beating sheet.
Carefully lower the sheet to the ground and collect the creatures in the pots.
Another child takes the place of the branch shaker and tries a different branch/tree.
When all children have had a go and have a creature each, they can try to and draw one of their creatures, in detail, on the recording sheet.
The children will realise that there are different invertebrates found on the ground compared to those found in the branches.

Art: Ask the children to draw the other invertebrates.
Maths: Ask pupils to produce a tally sheet of the different invertebrates found.
Science: Ask pupils why the invertebrates are different compared to the leaf litter and the branches.
Woodlands are multifaceted environments with a complex ecology and contain 1000s of invertebrates. Some of the invertebrates that will be discovered at Coed Bryn Oer will be woodlouse, worms and slugs under lying wood, various countryside spiders, and different flies from branches of trees.
